Beginning Cross-Stitching

Instructor: Rebekah Sigman

Students will be introduced to the principles of cross-stitching (supplies, technique, and pattern reading) as well as the endless ways this craft can be customized. This workshop will focus on students reading a cross-stitch pattern and completing a cross-stitch project from beginning to end. We will begin the workshop with an overview of cross-stitching and viewing completed projects and end the workshop by introducing students to the process of creating their own patterns.

Wheel Throwing One Day Workshop

Want to dip your hands in a little clay? Come join us for a two-hour workshop where you'll learn the fundamental steps of throwing. Participants will get to throw as much as they can, but will only be choosing one piece to keep. Participants will get to choose from 4 different glaze colors to match their perfect creation. Projects will be available for pick up two weeks from the workshop's completion. No experience is required!

Thriving Plants: Repotting and Care Essentials

Instructors: Amy and Dominic Esquibel (Owners of Botanik Culture, Inc.)

For this workshop, Dom and Amy will teach the students how to repot plants.  We will provide 2” plant varieties for the students to choose from.  They will each get a small terra cotta clay pot and soil for repotting.  We will provide the all materials.  It will be a step-by-step process.  From taking the plants out of their grow pots, placing them into the new clay pot, and adding nutrient-rich soil to the plant.  They will talk about what kind of light the plants need and how much water they will need, etc.  Teaching that all plants do not require the same care and what to look for if you happen to overwater, what happens to a plant if you move it and what happens to a plant when you repot it.  It’s the fundamentals of plant care.  We will explain how to care for the plants and the best way to help them flourish in their new home.  All supplies are included.

Miniature Marvels: Designing Succulent Gardens

Instructors: Amy and Dominic Esquibel (Owners of Botanik Culture, Inc.)

For this workshop, Dom and Amy will teach the students how to create a petite succulent garden.  We will provide small succulent rosette cuttings, so each student will receive a few succulents to work with.  We will also provide moss, river stones, and glass containers.  We will talk about the care and maintenance for this and give the students time to create a little succulent garden.  All supplies are included.

Can't decide what to order at the bar? Mixed up mixing cocktails? Practice with your own shaker or just sit back, relax and taste the sample cocktails created by your instructor. Students will observe barware and mixing technique demonstrations and will receive recipes for all the classic cocktails featured in the class. Rare Whiskey Seminar

The Whiskey Seminar, a limited one-time workshop, will cover several of the world's great whiskies:  Bourbon, Rye, and Single Malt Scotch.  The history, personalities and lore, distillation, and aging will be discussed.  Cocktail recipes will be shared.  Tasting samples of each whiskey will be available for attendees.

Dark Room Photography

This course is focused on introducing students to the fundamentals of black-and-white darkroom film photography. We will cover how a camera functions, the basics behind film development in a dark room, and learn how to develop your film into silver gel atin prints! This will also serve as an introduction to various photographers and styles of photography so students can see the range of ways to use a camera. Everyone will be able to use a disposable 35mm camera are bring their own to take their photos from idea to print.

Introduction to Digital Art

Introduction to Knitting

Knitting is a calming, creative, and portable art that lets you design things in just the right color and size. If you'd like to make useful handmade items while you watch tv, ride the bus, or listen to a lecture; if you need a creative outlet; or if you're looking for a meditative daily activity, then knitting is for you. In this two-session class, students will learn the four basic elements of knitting (plus a few extras) and will learn how to choose a pattern and yarn for their first project.

Introduction to Handbuilding

Instructor: Patty Marfise-Patt

In this class, we will spend six weeks creating functional ceramic pieces! You will build by hand using the three main types of hand built clay construction, pinching, coiling and slab. We will also explore Kurinuki. We will work with the glazes available in the studio and learn proper glaze procedures. We will look also at various surface decoration techniques, such as so that your pieces will be truly one of a kind!

Wheel Throwing I (Beginner)

Students will be introduced to the basic principles of making functional ceramic art. In this course, students will begin with the process of wheel throwing with detailed instruction on how to throw a cylinder, bowl, and much more. The kinesthetic process of pottery will be explored through developing technical skills on the wheel as well as understanding the function of various forms developed throughout the history of ceramics. Learn how to make functional work that you can use at home as foodware for yourself, friends, or family. This course is for students who have never worked with clay before and is the perfect introduction to wheel throwing.

Wheel Throwing II (Intermediate)

Wheel Throwing II is for students who have completed at least one wheel throwing course in the past. In this course, Students will learn how to throw a large range of functional work and explore complex ways of decorating and glazing. From mugs and bowls, to large vases, plates, and coffee pour-overs, this course is perfect for those who are looking to improve their throwing techniques and aesthetics. This course aims to improve the student's confidence in their abilities and to connect the larger community within the studio.
*Prerequisites: have taken a beginner’s wheel throwing class
Coffee How You Like It 

Instructor: Bradley Davey

In this course we will, first and foremost, drink a lot of coffee! Our goal is to help you develop preferences for coffee. To do that, we have to drink coffee! We’ll consider questions like: What country of origin do I prefer? What flavors do I prefer? How can I prepare coffee to meet my preferences? This last question is where we will spend most of our time. Beginning on day 1 we’ll sample different brewing methods. And we’ll experiment with them to bring out different flavors in coffee. We’ll then learn to manipulate a few key variables to produce cups of coffee that are perfect for our preferences. Along the way we’ll learn a little about the history of coffee, explore where coffee is grown, and how it is processed. But our central tasks will be these: to brew and drink lots of coffee to develop and meet preferences

American Sign Language I (Beginner) - online course

This course introduces the basics of American Sign Language. American Sign Language (ASL) is quickly becoming one of the most widely used languages in the United States. This class will explore basic sign vocabulary and basic grammatical structures such as English to ASL and ASL to English. This class will cover basic Sign Language and a basic introduction to the world of Deaf Cultures.

Creative Writing

In Creative Writing, participants create their own original and personal stories. This course is ideal for anyone interested in the basics of narrative writing, improving communication skills, storytelling, and taking their writing to the next level. Along the way, we’ll explore the philosophy, metaphysics, and psychology of inspiration and creativity.  We will look at how creative writing benefits mental health by using exercises that access hidden feelings and memories in ways that help us process trauma.

Journal Writing

Bring your lunch and join us for a course designed to train participants to use observation and creative writing to document the times in which we live. We will look at how storytellers around the world and throughout history use video, audio, prose, and art journals to document the world in which they live. Students will learn to appreciate the inner journey writing offers as a source of therapy and personal expression. Students may strengthen their vocabulary, improve writing styles, and discover inventive ways of diary writing. Students will be introduced to many historic diaries from a wide range of authors.

Bachata Dancing

Discover the fundamentals of Bachata, a captivating and sensual dance style from the Dominican Republic. In this class, you'll learn about the history and basic movements of Bachata. We'll focus on both solo and partner dancing, emphasizing the social aspects of the dance. By the end of the course, you'll be able to recognize Bachata rhythms and patterns, perform essential steps with flair, and dance confidently with a partner. All levels are welcome, and no dance experience is required.
Introduction to Contemporary Dance

Since its earliest beginnings in 1920s Harlem, swing has been a popular social dance known for its energetic movement and upbeat tempos. This class will introduce you to the history and basic movements of swing dance. We will focus on both solo and partner dancing, with an emphasis on the social aspects of the dance. By the end of the course you will be able to identify swing music, execute swing’s rhythmic steps, and dance with a partner. All levels are welcome and no dance experience is required.

Salsa Dancing

Known for its energetic and sensual movements, salsa is one of the most popular dances in the world. This class will introduce you to the history and basic movements of salsa dance. We will focus on both solo and partner dancing, with an emphasis on the social aspects of the dance. By the end of the course, you will be able to recognize the rhythms of salsa music, execute salsa’s basic steps, and dance with a partner. All levels are welcome and no dance experience is required.

Tai Chi

Come learn Tai Chi,  is a non-combat martial art, that helps cultivate mental focus and builds protective energy. This course will introduce the skills and philosophy of ancient Chinese martial arts. This traditional spiritual and physical practice cultivates spirit, energy, physical and mental strength, focus, and memory. Great ideas have an opportunity to emerge during the calm meditative state it provides.  Join the Tai Qi class conducted by the Doctor of Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine Inna Melnikov, who has taught Tai Qi at Norris for over 15 years.

Self-Defense Course

Effective self-defense requires the development of physical readiness, but just as important is developing good judgment, emotional control, and resistance to intimidation. In this 5 session course taught by the Chicago Karate Club, students will be introduced to concepts derived from classical Japanese martial arts, learn practical physical skills and implement new skills in scenario-based training. Students will work with partners, and some light contact will occur.

Sensual Movement Series

Instructor: Brittany Jenkins

The Sensual Series is designed to get students into their bodies and out of their heads! It’s a fun way to exercise, increase body awareness, learn new dance skills (no previous experience required), and embrace the beauty of sensual movement! This is a movement/exercise class and one should expect to gain strength and endurance over the weeks while attending. You will move both on and off the mat throughout class, so make sure to bring a yoga mat and knee pads. You’ll be learning the basics of sensual dance, choreography, some twerking, optional heels, and chair dance.  It’s open and accessible to everyone!

Beauty Makeup 101

This course is perfect for beginners in makeup, those aiming to refine their skills, or anyone seeking personalized beauty tips. Each week, we'll concentrate on a different facial feature, covering general skin care, eyes, lips, brows, and more. Open to all genders and skin tones, this class recognizes the unique nature of makeup and skin care, so supplies are not included. The instructor will provide a list of necessary items for you to bring to each session.

Learn to Play Ancient Board Games

Learn to play games that are thousands of years old! In this course, we will learn the rules, strategies, and gameplay of ancient board games from Egypt, Greece, Rome, India, and Mesopotamia. We will play the games in class, and even learn to make our own game boards! In the short lecture portions of the course, we will discuss the history of board games and how ancient games have been recovered and reconstructed, as well as some basics of game theory.

Public Speaking: How to Speak with Confidence and Impact

In this class, we will learn how to develop the skills and the confidence needed to make clear, professional, and persuasive presentations to audiences of any size. In addition to the emphasis on physical delivery skills, other important topics include analyzing the audience, organizing the content, using visuals to support the message, and handling questions and objections. Some topics covered include organizing your thoughts for persuasion, audience analysis, physical delivery skills congruent to your style and message, detractors and enhancers, delivering effective presentations, physical delivery skills, and overcoming resistance and Q&A.
