Out of State HMO's
Please be advised that most out-of-state HMO (Health Maintenance Organization) insurance plans do not meet ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ University’s requirements for comparable health coverage. In general, HMO plans issued outside the state of Illinois limit coverage to emergency services only. As a result, students with such plans—and the University—may be held responsible for the costs of any non-emergency medical care received while on campus.
This policy has been formally reviewed and approved by the NU-SHIP (ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ University Student Health Insurance Plan) Policy Committee, which includes representatives from University leadership and campus administration.
Some insurance providers offer a “guest network” option designed specifically for college students studying out of state. This feature may provide access to routine and non-emergency medical services in the Evanston/Chicago area. We strongly recommend contacting your insurance provider to ask if a guest network is available.
If this option is available, please submit a letter from your insurance company confirming both the guest network access and coverage for routine/non-emergency care in Illinois. If this coverage is not available, the student will be required to either enroll in the NU-SHIP or obtain alternate comparable coverage that meets the University’s comparable coverage standards.
