Spiritual Direction

Spiritual Direction is a space to pause, reflect, and explore your inner life whatever your background or beliefs. Whether you’re navigating change, asking big questions, or simply curious, you’re welcome here.  with Eric Budzynski, Spiritual Director.

What Is Spiritual Direction?

Spiritual Direction is a one-on-one conversation where someone accompanies you in exploring life’s big questions about meaning, purpose, identity, or anything else stirring in you.

It’s open to people of all backgrounds, whether you follow a specific religion, don’t identify as anything in particular, or find yourself somewhere in between. If you’re breathing, you have a spiritual life! Spiritual Direction simply offers a space to pay attention to your inner world.

Who Is It For?

Spiritual Direction is for anyone navigating questions like:
  • What gives my life meaning?
  • How do my values line up with the career path I’ve chosen for myself?
  • Does my family’s religion make sense to me anymore?
  • What if I don’t believe in anything?
You don’t need to have answers but just the willingness to ponder them.

Do I Need to Be Religious?

Not at all. People from all spiritual backgrounds or none find value in Spiritual Direction. Whether you’re religious, spiritual-but-not-religious, agnostic, atheist, or just unsure, this is a space for reflection and exploration, not judgment or conversion.

What Happens in a Session?

Most people meet about once a month for about 45 minutes. These conversations span a broad range of topics:
  • Questions about identity, relationships, or vocation
  • Feelings around grief, change, or uncertainty
  • Wonderings about the divine, God, the universe, or just something more

Sessions may include silence, conversation, meditation, prayer, or reflection with texts or images.

Spiritual Direction is guided by someone who is trained in the process of supporting individuals like you in your quest for making meaning. A Spiritual Director walks alongside you throughout the duration of each session, providing listening, presence, and invitations for reflection on topics related to spirituality.

Is It Confidential?

Spiritual Direction welcomes a private and intimate conversation where folx are given the space, trust, and vulnerability to share in a way that feels safe and right for them. By nature of the spiritual director being employed by the university, they may be obligated to contact appropriate resources if there is an imminent threat to you or another person. This may include situations that involve, but are not limited to sexual assault, harassment, and discrimination.

How Is This Different from Therapy?

One significant difference between Spiritual Direction and therapy is that it doesn’t focus on diagnosing or fixing problems. Instead, it honors your full self, your questions, your story, your inner life and helps you explore how it all connects to something deeper. That being said, many people find that Spiritual Direction complements therapy really well.
